Why we built it

The load left looking legal. The scale disagreed.

This is the original failure AxleGuard was built to prevent. It has three causes, none of them is carelessness, and solving it properly connects the load to the rules, route and live run.

One morning

Nobody in this story does anything wrong.

Every step below is normal practice, done by people who are good at their jobs. That is what makes it worth understanding: if the failure needed somebody to be careless, it would be rarer than it is.

    The freight is staged

    Fourteen pallets of paper goods, built the way they were built last week, because last week was fine. The heavy ones go on first because they are nearest the door of the warehouse.

    Gross combination weight, 77,720 lb. Under the 80,000 lb limit with room to spare. Everyone in the chain — shipper, broker, dispatcher, driver — reads the same number and agrees the load is fine.

    The driver rolls

    Nothing about the truck looks wrong. It sits level, the trailer is sealed, the bill is signed. There is no observable difference between this load and the four hundred that went out clean.

    Steer 11,820 lb. Drive tandem 35,140 lb against a 34,000 lb limit. Trailer tandem 30,760 lb. Nothing was overloaded. The pallets sit about fourteen inches too far forward, and the drives are carrying weight the trailer group should have.

    The day stops

    Out of service until it is legal. A citation on the drive axle. A crew has to be found, a dock has to be free, and the receiver has a window that is about to close. Two minutes of work on the dock has become a day.

These figures are a worked example

They are the arithmetic of a realistic five-axle load, not a measurement taken from a customer. Where this site uses a number from the engine's own tests, it says so.

Why it keeps happening

Three causes, and every one of them is invisible on paper.

These are not three symptoms of one root cause. They are three separate mechanisms, and a fleet can be beaten by any one of them on its own.

Cause one

Weight is a distribution, and the paperwork records a total

A tractor-trailer is not a container on a scale. It is a set of supports, and the freight on the deck is shared between them according to where it sits.

A load can sit 8,000 lb under gross and still be written up.

Two supports, one lever

The trailer rests on the kingpin at the front and its own tandem at the back. Anything you put on the deck is divided between those two points in proportion to how close it is to each one. Freight near the nose loads the kingpin, and the kingpin sits on the tractor's drive axles. Freight near the doors loads the trailer tandem instead.

The total never moves, so the total never warns you

Slide the whole load forward three feet and the gross weight is identical to the pound. What changes is which group carries it. That is why a bill of lading cannot catch this: the only number it holds is the one number that does not change.

The correction is small and specific

On a van with a sliding tandem, each hole of travel moves a few hundred pounds between the drive group and the trailer group. Experienced planners carry a rule of thumb for their own trailers and are usually right. The arithmetic is exact for a given trailer, and it is different for every trailer, which is why a rule of thumb eventually meets a load it does not fit.

Cause two

The run changes the answer after you have signed for it

Legal at the dock is a statement about one moment. The truck then spends ten hours changing the conditions that statement was based on.

Legal at departure is not the same as legal on arrival.

Freight comes off in an order nobody planned around

A multi-stop run is a series of different loads wearing the same seal. Take the rear third off at stop two and the remaining freight has moved forward relative to the tandem, without anybody touching it. A load that was balanced at the dock can be nose-heavy by the afternoon.

Fuel is weight, and it burns off unevenly

Diesel is roughly seven pounds a gallon and it sits mostly over the steer and drive axles. Four hundred miles of it is real weight leaving the front of the truck. That helps a drive-heavy load and hurts a steer-light one, and it is invisible to everything except a scale.

The check has to move with the truck

Ask the question again at every leg. What is aboard now? Where does it sit? What does the rule set on this side of the state line say?

Cause three

The rules move with the truck, and they do not agree

There is no single limit to be under. There is a stack of limits, they differ by jurisdiction, and the one that binds is whichever is lowest at that point on the route.

One load, several rule sets, and only one wrong answer needed.

Four limits, and the lowest one wins

Every axle group is bounded by statute, by the bridge formula applied to that group and its spacing, by what the tires are rated to carry, and by what the axle itself is rated to carry. A verdict that names only one of them has not answered the question.

Ten groups on a five-axle truck

The bridge formula does not apply to axle pairs. It applies to every consecutive set of axles, and a standard five-axle combination has ten of them. The group that fails is usually not one of the three anyone thinks to check.

The state line is a rule change

Limits, bridge interpretations, permit thresholds and seasonal restrictions all change when the truck crosses. The same 44,000 lb configuration can be legal in one state and a citation in the next, so jurisdiction has to be a property of the load rather than a setting on the account.

The arithmetic

The same 77,720 lb, measured the five ways it can be cited.

One of these numbers is on the bill of lading and everybody in the chain read it. The other four decide whether the truck rolls, and nothing in the yard prints any of them.

The three axle readings are what the scale printed at 11:20. The last line is the federal bridge formula applied to the four axles from the drives to the rear of the trailer: 500 × ((36×4)/3 + 48 + 36) = 66,000 lb, against 65,900 carried. Gross passes by 2,280 lb. The drive tandem fails by 1,140. A worked example, with the arithmetic shown so it can be checked.

The one number everybody in the chain agreed on was the only one the scale did not care about.

The usual answers

Four things a careful fleet already does, and where each one stops.

None of these is wrong. Each is good at the job it was built for, and the gap between them is where the fines live.

The gross weight on the bill

Correct, freely available, and answering a different question. It is the one number that does not change when the load is built badly.

A trip to the certified scale

The right numbers, at the wrong time. By then the trailer is sealed, the crew has gone home, and the only fix left is to break the load down and rebuild it.

The planner's experience

Genuinely good, and usually right. It cannot cover every consecutive axle group, the tire rating, the next state's rule set and four hundred miles of fuel burn at the same time.

A truck-legal route

Keeps the truck away from low bridges and restricted roads, which matters. It has no opinion at all about how the freight sits on the deck.

What would fix it

Four things would have to be true at the same time.

Not four features. Four conditions. Anything that satisfies three of them still leaves the load that gets written up.

Three of these four are worth nothing on their own. The load that gets cited is the one that slips through whichever is missing.

The problem costs two minutes and a forklift instead of a citation, a crew and a delivery window.

Every axle group is solved from where the freight actually sits, while the load is still being built on the floor.

The usual check happens after the trailer is sealed, when the only available fix is to take it apart again.

The person on the dock knows what to change, and the person who signs knows why it changed.

The answer names the rule that bound — statute, bridge formula, tire rating or axle rating — on the group that failed.

A red banner that says over tells a planner nothing they can act on, so they guess, and guessing is how a load gets rebuilt twice.

The instruction reaches the person holding the forklift in the form they already work in.

The correction comes back as a move: slide the tandems back four holes, or shift the front two pallets aft.

Percentages and overage figures need translating into yard instructions by somebody who is already behind.

The load that changes verdict at three in the afternoon is caught in the morning, when it is still cheap.

The verdict is recomputed at every stop and at every state line, with fuel burn and dropped freight carried through.

One check at the dock is a statement about one moment in a run that lasts ten hours.

The same morning, done differently

The pallets move at 05:40, and nothing else happens.

The load is built on the floor with the axle gauges live. The drive tandem shows over before the trailer is sealed. Two pallets go aft, the gauges settle, and the truck leaves with a verdict that survives the state line.

  • The problem is found while the freight is still reachable by a forklift
  • The fix is stated as a move, not as a percentage over a limit
  • The verdict carries the rule that bound it, so the decision can be explained later
  • The same answer is on the planner's screen and on the driver's phone
  • The load that will fail after stop two fails on the screen this morning

Reasonable objections

Four things people say back to this page.

01Is this not what an onboard scale is for?
An onboard scale measures what you have once it is loaded, which is genuinely useful and comes too late to plan with. It cannot tell you where to put the next pallet, it cannot answer for the state you have not reached yet, and it cannot be consulted before the freight is on the trailer. The two are complements, not substitutes.
02Our loads are almost never near 80,000 lb. Does this still apply?
It applies more, not less. Gross weight is the number people watch and it is almost never the one that gets cited. A 68,000 lb load built toward the nose puts the drive tandem over while the total looks comfortable, and nobody checks a load that looks comfortable.
03Our planners are good. Is this saying they are not?
No. The good ones do this arithmetic in their heads and are right most of the time. What nobody does in their head is ten consecutive axle groups, four competing limits per group, a second jurisdiction and four hundred miles of fuel burn. The tool exists for the load that does not look like the last hundred.
04What happens when a load genuinely cannot be made legal?
Then it should stop being a loading problem and start being a permit problem. If the freight cannot be split and no position works, the load is routed to the permit pathway rather than being handed an impossible instruction.
