Samsara is a strong platform and a fleet running it is better off than a fleet without it. It reports on a vehicle that is already loaded, which is the wrong end of an overweight axle.
Who it is for
The breadth is the point, and it is executed well. This page is not an argument about quality.
The product covers vehicle tracking, hours-of-service logs and camera-based safety with coaching. It also handles engine diagnostics, trailer monitoring and equipment monitoring. Other software can read the same data through its developer platform. Very few vendors cover that much ground without something becoming an afterthought.
For a safety director, the value is obvious and immediate. An incident that used to be one driver's word against another's is now footage. A maintenance failure that used to be a roadside breakdown is now a work order. Hours that used to be a paper book are now a record that survives an audit.
None of that is diminished by what follows. Telematics is the instrument panel of a fleet and the panel is excellent. It is simply not where the flight plan gets written.
Nothing that platform reports is wrong. All of it is about a trailer that has already been loaded.
The one place we meet
The job it was not built for
This is a property of the category rather than a shortcoming of this product. Everything telematics knows, it learns from a vehicle.

Thirty-five thousand pounds on the drives may be fine or may be a citation, depending on the axle spacing, the bridge formula subset, the tire rating and which state the truck is in.
The output a yard can act on is a move — which pallets, how far, how many slider holes. That comes from a model of where the freight sits, not from a pressure reading.
Six of those rows are the truck and the driver: two are a plain no and four are partial in our column. The other seven are all answered before the freight goes on, which is the one place a sensor cannot reach.

Methodology
When to pick them instead
You need a production electronic logging device today. AxleGuard is marked part because its record workflow is built but not yet FMCSA registered; Samsara is the operational choice for the legal log.
You need cameras, driver coaching and a safety programme with evidence behind it.
You need engine fault codes reaching the shop before the truck reaches the shoulder.
You want one platform across vehicles, trailers and powered equipment, with other software able to read the same data.
Working together
Five axle numbers, the binding rule on each, and the physical move if one of them is over — while the freight is still on the floor and a forklift is still cheap.
Derived position and axle signals test the live workflow now. A physical truck source is described as measured only after its gateway passes commissioning.
The morning's prediction and the afternoon's reading on the same picture. When they disagree, something in the equipment record is wrong and that is worth finding on trailer one.
AxleGuard can exercise an append-only HOS workflow and driver certification, but production transfer remains locked until registration. The fleet's registered ELD remains the legal record.
